Chris: Hey guys, welcome back to the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast with Erin and Chris. What’s going on? I’m Chris and as usual, sitting—not beside me, actually in another room—but the absolutely incredible action taker, Erin Vertus. What’s up, Erin?
Erin: Hey babe. What’s going on?
Chris: Not much. So why don’t we get right into it? Because today’s topic is actually relevant to everybody’s life. No matter if you’re a parent, a young adult, or even 90 years old, this one’s going to serve you. Erin, do you want to share today’s topic?
Erin: Today we’re talking about overcoming resistance and why it can change your life, your health, your emotional state—everything. When you learn the art of overcoming resistance and understand how it impacts you, you unlock real transformation.

--- How Resistance Shows Up ---
Erin: Resistance isn’t just about the “big things.” It shows up when you want to go back to the gym, spend more time with your child, or eat healthier. It shows up as inner dialogue: “I tried this before and it didn’t work” or “I’ll never follow through.”
Chris: For me, resistance often takes the form of limiting beliefs. Even though I know who I am and what I’m capable of, when I’m stepping into something bigger, scary, and new, those beliefs creep in.
Erin: Exactly. Resistance is normal. But we have to learn to notice it, check in with ourselves, and then take action anyway.
--- The Tools: Checking In, Box Breathing, and the 5-Second Rule ---
Chris: One of the rituals we always teach is checking in. Before you start something important, slow down. Ask yourself: What am I thinking? What am I feeling? What’s going on inside me?
Erin: A great way to ground yourself is with box breathing: inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, rest for 4. Repeat a few times. It detaches you from fear, exhaustion, or excuses—and gives you the space to act.
Chris: Then comes action. That’s where Mel Robbins’ 5-Second Rule comes in: count backward—5, 4, 3, 2, 1—and then just do it. Start the run. Open the homework. Record the video. The longer you wait, the more resistance wins.
