3 Life-Changing Questions That Help Young Adults Find Motivation and Direction
The Power of One Simple Conversation
Sometimes, the most powerful moments with our teens or young adults don’t come from advice or lectures — they come from questions.
In one of my recent coaching sessions, a young adult was feeling completely stuck — unsure what direction to go, unmotivated, and overwhelmed by the pressure to “figure it all out.” Instead of trying to fix it, I asked three questions that shifted everything:
1. What am I going to do differently tomorrow?
2. What’s one idea I’m going to follow up on?
3. What’s one thing I’m going to do to get out of my comfort zone?
That was it.
But in that moment, his mindset changed from confusion to curiosity. From pressure to possibility.

Why These Questions Work
As a life coach for young adults, I’ve seen how simple reflection tools like this can re-ignite motivation and self-belief. These questions:
- Shift focus to small wins.** Big change doesn’t happen overnight. But small, consistent actions build momentum and confidence.
- Encourage ownership.** When young adults come up with their own ideas, they stop relying on external motivation — and start trusting themselves.
- Build awareness.** Each question invites self-reflection, which is the foundation of emotional intelligence and personal growth.
This kind of mindset training is at the heart of what we do in our Extraordinary Purpose Coaching Programs

What Parents Can Do
Parents often ask me, *“How do I get my teen or young adult motivated again?”*
The answer usually isn’t about discipline or pressure. It’s about creating an inspiring environment — one where your child feels safe to explore who they are, what matters to them, and what they want their future to look like.
You can start this week by simply introducing one of these questions into your conversations. Maybe on a walk, during a car ride, or while making dinner. Keep it light, curious, and open-ended.
And most importantly — share your own answers too. When your kids see that you’re still asking questions, still growing, still taking small risks — they realize that *growth never stops.*
