How to Be the Leader Your Home (and Teen) Actually Needs
You’ve led work meetings. You’ve managed projects. You’ve survived group texts with relatives. But leading your home? That’s next-level.
Because at home, your “team” doesn’t always want to listen, doesn’t read the group chat, and occasionally leaves socks in places science can’t explain.
But here’s the truth:
Leadership starts at home.
And the way we lead our homes shapes how our teens and young adults learn to lead themselves.
At Extraordinary Purpose, we teach parents and young adults that leadership isn’t about control — it’s about creating clarity, shared purpose, and consistency. When you bring your family into that process, something amazing happens: everyone starts to take ownership of the energy, the environment, and the growth inside your home.
Why “Doing It All” Isn’t Leadership — It’s Exhaustion
We’ve all said it: “It’s just faster if I do it.”
But every time we do, we take away our kids’ chance to learn initiative and teamwork — and we overload ourselves in the process.
Delegating isn’t about chores. It’s about trust.
It’s how we communicate:
“I believe in you. You’re capable. You’re part of this family’s purpose.”
When teens and young adults feel trusted with real responsibility, they begin to see themselves differently. They step up, they problem-solve, and they start feeling proud of the home they help create.
A Real-Life Example from Our Home
A few months ago, Erin and I realized that our “family system” needed a reboot. We were doing too much, and the kids were floating in their own worlds.
So we started what we now call our Sunday Family Reset.
Here’s how it works:
-
Everyone picks a small zone or role for the week — dishes, laundry, dog walks, or meal prep.
-
We set a quick intention: “How do we want our home to feel this week?”
-
We check in midweek — not to critique, but to celebrate wins and talk about what’s working.
It’s fun, it’s messy, and it’s real. Some weeks are smoother than others, but what’s constant is that everyone feels involved.
And when our kids feel that sense of purpose at home, they carry it into school, relationships, and their future.
How to Lead Your Home with Purpose (and Keep It Fun!)
Here are some simple ways to start this week:
✅ 1. Start with a shared question:
Ask your family, “What do we want our home to feel like?” — calm, connected, playful, peaceful? This sets the tone for teamwork.
✅ 2. Create small leadership roles:
Give each person something that’s theirs to own — a space, a task, or a ritual. Let them make it theirs (even if it’s not perfect).
✅ 3. Model gratitude and consistency:
When your teen follows through, notice it out loud. “Hey, I appreciate that you handled the laundry today — that helped everyone.”
✅ 4. Lead by example:
If you want your kids to be responsible, calm, and kind — show them what that looks like. That’s true leadership.
✅ 5. Have fun with it:
Blast music, dance while cleaning, laugh through the chaos. Shared effort builds shared energy.
The Ripple Effect
When you lead your home with purpose, you’re not just raising responsible kids — you’re raising leaders.
You’re teaching your teens and young adults that they’re part of something meaningful, and that their actions matter. And as a parent, you’re freeing yourself from the pressure of doing it all — so you can spend more time connecting, laughing, and modeling the kind of calm confidence you want your kids to grow into.
That’s the kind of leadership that transforms families.
That’s what we help families create every day at Extraordinary Purpose.
