Welcome to the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast, where we explore the real challenges parents face when raising teens and young adults—and how to navigate them with confidence, clarity, and purpose.
In today’s episode, we’re diving into one of the most important parenting skills you can develop:
Staying grounded in hard moments.
Because when you’re not grounded—you react.
And when you react—you lose influence.
But when you’re calm, present, and connected…
You change everything.
---
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR PARENTS OF TEENS AND YOUNG ADULTS
Your teen or young adult will trigger you.
They will challenge your patience, your expectations, and sometimes even your identity as a parent.
And in those moments, you have two choices:
React…
Or respond.
Most parents react—not because they’re bad parents, but because they’re overwhelmed, triggered, or stuck in autopilot.
But grounded parents respond.
And that’s where real growth happens.
---
REAL LIFE EXAMPLE: STAYING GROUNDED WITH YOUR TEEN
In this episode, we share a powerful story about a moment with a teenage daughter who was overwhelmed, emotional, and frustrated.
Instead of reacting, jumping in, or trying to “fix” the situation…
We stayed grounded.
We paused.
We listened.
We didn’t engage in the emotional reaction.
And something incredible happened:
She worked it out on her own.
This is the power of staying grounded as a parent.
When you don’t react…
You create space.
And that space allows your child to grow.
---
WHY PARENTS STRUGGLE TO STAY CALM
Most parents aren’t reacting to what’s happening in the moment.
They’re reacting to:
- Past experiences
- Fear about the future
- Internal pressure to “get it right”
This pulls you out of the present moment.
And when you’re not present—you can’t see solutions.
---
THE CORE SKILL: HOW TO STAY GROUNDED
Staying grounded is not something you do once.
It’s a daily practice.
Here are some simple, powerful tools you can start using immediately:
---
1. PAUSE & CHECK-IN
Ask yourself:
- What am I feeling right now?
- What do I need right now?
This simple pause can completely change how you show up.
---
2. BOX BREATHING
Inhale for 4 seconds
Hold for 4 seconds
Exhale for 4 seconds
Pause for 4 seconds
Repeat 2–3 times.
This resets your nervous system and brings you back into the present moment.
---
3. GET OUT OF AUTOPILOT
Most parents are in “go mode” all day.
Grounding requires you to slow down.
Even for 30 seconds.
---
4. TAKE A WALK
Movement changes your state.
A short walk can reset your mind, your energy, and your emotions.
---
5. JOURNAL & REFLECT
At the end of the day, ask:
- Where did I show up well?
- Where did I react?
- What can I learn?
This builds awareness—and awareness creates change.
---
6. MEDITATION & DAILY PRACTICE
Grounding doesn’t happen in the moment…
It happens because you’ve practiced before the moment.
---
THE BIG TAKEAWAY
You don’t need better parenting strategies.
You need to become a more grounded version of yourself.
Because when you are:
- Calm
- Present
- Connected
You lead differently.
You communicate differently.
You influence differently.
And your relationship with your teen or young adult transforms.
