OPENING PREVIEW: START BEFORE THE NEW YEAR
Erin: And we are wired in our culture to a lot of times at this time of year think, "Eh, the new year's coming. I'll just put this off until, my New Year's resolution." Or, "I'll just let that go until the new year." Some people even really take advantage. It's like, "I'm just gonna really dive into this and overeat or forget the gym, and I'll just start over in January."
Erin: And so what Chris and I wanna say is, hell no, we're not doing that.

WELCOME: WHAT COULD CHANGE IN THE NEXT 90 DAYS?
Chris: Hello there and welcome back to the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast with... I'm Chris, and as always, I am here with the absolutely incredible Erin Verdis. What's up, sweetheart?
Erin: Hey guys, how are you? What's up, babe?
Chris: No, it's going great. It is good to be back with you, sweetheart. It's good to be back with you, listener, for what we hope is gonna be a really powerful and helpful conversation.
Chris: And the reason that we are all here today is a good one, because it is the end of September, or at least that's when we're recording this. You may be listening to this at a different time of the year, but you know what?
Chris: That's okay too, right, Erin?
Erin: Yeah, you can definitely take this into any month that you're in.
Chris: But the message that we wanted to get across, no matter where you're currently at with your year, and your life, and your family, and your goals, we want you to know, and this is a reminder for Erin and myself as well, there are still three months left in this year.
Chris: And most importantly, we want for us all to recognize how much can happen, how much change can happen in three months.
Erin: And if you really break that down, 'cause I know this always helps me when I hear 90 days is, a lot more helpful. Somehow three months always sounds like way down the road. Isn't that funny how we're all different like that? And then when I hear 90- when I hear the days, I'm like, "Oh, I can do 90 days."
Erin: Because the truth is, as we all get older, and we know most of you are, like, parents around our age listening to this.
Erin: Time—ah, none of your business. We all know how old I am. Time flies. Ninety days is gone. Three months, forget it. A year flies by. Five years can fly by. So 90 days is not bad.
WHY PARENTS DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL JANUARY
Erin: Yes, Chris and I have both been researching some strategies to set some personal goals and a couple goals for our business, and what keeps coming up over and over again is this 90-day concept. Because.
Erin: right, we're going into the early stages of October, which gives us just that, about that 90-day window before dun, dun, dun, 2027 gets here.
And as always, we love doing this podcast 'cause it helps us as well. We're always, coaching ourselves when we record these. So we're in this with you, and we have some goals that we wanna create for ourselves. And when you really think about it, this is the time to gain momentum as we think about these last three months.
Erin: Instead of this being scary and like, "Oh my God, the holidays are coming. This is... it's a lot to handle," get excited about it. And we're gonna talk today, this one's for parents. We're gonna make this a two-part series. So today we're gonna help you parents really focus on what you wanna start creating over these next 90 days as you go into this new year, personally, as a parent, maybe in your relationship.
Erin: And then next week we're gonna record one that's gonna be specifically to help young adults do the same thing.
Chris: Yeah. And, they're both gonna make a really big difference. Erin, so it got me thinking as you were describing the next three months, it got me thinking about a philosophy actually that I've had for forever, and that is just this idea that it doesn't matter how you started. It doesn't matter, like, how good or bad your year has gone. Hopefully, it's been a good year. You've done some good things. But you know what? Maybe that's not always the case here is our opportunity to come together, to regroup, to realign, and to finish the year strong.
Chris: And not only will that make a difference for you, it's gonna make a difference for your family, and it's also something that Erin and I were talking about earlier is it's how you build momentum, for next year. And that's something that I think a lot of people have this strategy that on January 1st, we're just gonna start over, we're gonna start from zero, and then everything's gonna change. What if we told you that we could really create that change if we started today?
Chris: That's the mindset that we wanted to carry forward.
CREATE A VISION AND A PLAN FOR YOURSELF
Erin: Hopefully, as you're listening to this, it's about getting your wheels turning a little bit. You start thinking about, what do I want? What are some new things I wanna create in this new year?
Erin: And starting to get a plan together because what happens is we go in often to a new year, and we don't have the plan ready. We have this idea, we have a little seed that maybe is planted, but we don't really have a strategy where we don't have the resources yet. We haven't created the plan. And so imagine if you could spend the next 90 days, first of all, getting clarity on what you want.
Erin: creating that vision, getting into almost that emotional state of like this is how I wanna feel going into the new year. This is what I wanna see in my relationships. These are some new things and some goals I wanna set for myself as an individual, not just mom or dad, or a caretaker or an employee or a business owner, whatever it is.
Erin: But you as an individual.
Erin: And then start creating the plan, getting resourceful. What do I need to have lined up for myself, and then you start doing it. You get going, and that way, when that clock strikes midnight on New Year's Day and you wake up the next day, there isn't this sense of doom and gloom like, "Oh my God, it's a new year.
Erin: I should have goals in place," or this fear that it's all gonna fall apart in a couple weeks after I get started 'cause you've already got going. You've already started.
Chris: We talk so much about—you know— the way forward is very unique to us. And so that's the philosophy here is that you don't wanna do things like everybody else, what they're doing is their thing, but your way forward is by really understanding that you have to think differently, do things differently, and that is why we are here today, is to do things differently.
RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF AS A PARENT
Erin: Absolutely, babe. So let's start to think about some areas of your life that we're gonna focus in on today. So as we're talking, start to think about, you know, a lot of you have a lot of concern and fear around your relationship with your young adult, that's really primarily what we talk about on this podcast, 'cause we do, too, as we always say.
Erin: And so if you're thinking about, going into this new year, is my relationship with my son or daughter gonna look the same, feel the same? I really want things to shift. I just don't know what to do. I want to have a fresh start. And the truth is, there is this beautiful collective energy as we go into the holiday season, 'cause we do all get excited about something new.
Erin: that's, that's coming our way, and there is this collective sense of like renewal and let's start fresh.
Erin: And so there's nothing wrong with that. We want you to get into that state of mind ahead of time. So you're thinking about your relationship with your child, maybe your relationship with your partner that you want things to shift. You want to have a fresh start. You want things to get better.
Erin: Whatever that is for you. And then your relationship with yourself and what you want to start creating in the next 90 days that's gonna help you build momentum for the new year. Let's talk about that first because as always, you know that Chris and I are big on when you reconnect with yourself as a parent, when you are in a better mindset and you have clarity on what's important to you and you're connecting with your passions and your interests and you are learning more about self-love and taking care of yourself, you're gonna show up in those other relationships a lot better.
Erin: As you think about reconnecting with yourself, it's important to start thinking about just what parts of my life do I feel that I've set aside or I don't take care of as much 'cause I'm taking care of everybody else, right?, So if you're a dad, maybe just working a lot and taking care of the house and taking care of everything that you feel has to get done, but you've put some things aside that are yours, that are important to you.
Erin: Moms- taking care of the kids, making sure everything's signed, the forms are signed, everyone's got what they need, getting them from here to there. Just making sure everybody else is taken care of. Where are you letting yourself fall by the wayside? What are some things that are really important for you to start focusing in on?
Erin: Again, it could be your physical wellbeing and your health, getting back in shape, taking better care of yourself. It could be a passion, something that you know deep down you wanna pursue and you keep putting it off and putting it off. Could be your relationships need to be in a better space. There's so many things.
Erin: What is it for you that you want to start putting your focus back on as we think about going into the new year?
Chris: This is about us coming back to ourselves. If we want these next three months to be different, Erin, then we have to be different. I think that's the main understanding here is we have to be different. If we keep doing things the same way.
Chris: we keep putting all the focus on our kids or all the focus on our job or something else in our life, it means that we're not focused, Erin, on the most important thing, which is us.
ERIN’S GOALS: WRITING A BOOK AND BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS
Erin: Yeah, so maybe you're sitting there thinking, "I'm not sure. I'm not sure exactly what it is I wanna focus on." So I think it might be helpful, and Chris, I'm kinda putting you on the spot 'cause we didn't talk about this, but maybe we could share a couple things that we've both been working on recently that we know we wanna really, like, hit the ground running and dive into deeper once the new year comes.
Erin: And so a couple that just came to mind for me is in the last couple months I've started writing more. And I've been saying for a long time that I wanna write my book, and I've been really getting into the writing mode. And I kind of fell out of it for a couple weeks, and I told Chris, I said, "This morning I have to take some time to get some writing done."
Erin: And so I did that knowing... Well, it was you, honey, 'cause you actually said to me a couple months ago, you said, "Erin, if you don't at least get started on your book before the new year comes, you're gonna hate yourself." 'Cause you know me, because I've been talking about this for a long time. It's in my heart.
Erin: It's a passion of mine. It's something that I know that I, it's my responsibility to bring this book to life for so many reasons, without going in too deep about what it's about. And so he was right. I'm like, "You know what? He's right." And we need that. We need, whether you have a coach or you can ask your partner or a best friend, we need those people in our lives that can hold us accountable and kinda hold up the mirror when we need them to.
Erin: So I started writing, and I was just telling Chris out on a walk this morning, I said, "I'm starting to get to the place with my writing where I know I need more time. I need a couple days sometimes away to just write." So as I start thinking about these next 90 days, I'm thinking about, I might not be able to do a whole lot of that between now and then, but going into the new year over the winter, how am I gonna start, accomplishing that?
Erin: I'm gonna start getting resourceful and getting clear. Do I rent a cabin somewhere? How do I get away for a day or two completely by myself so that I can just focus in on my writing? And then another area for me, is friendship, another thing that's been really important to me that I have lacked a lot of, to be really vulnerable and honest.
Erin: Chris is my best friend, and I spend 24/7 with him running our business and everything. And, luckily I pretty much love being with him all the time, and I run a business, and I have busy kids, and it's really easy to not worry so much about having, a lot of friends, but it's also something that is a void in my life.
Erin: And so I've been working on finding women's groups and being one to reach out and ask another mom recently if she wanted to go on a hike with me. And so I'm trying to really cultivate that so going into the new year I have some more solid friendships in place that I can keep building upon. So those are just some ideas of what we mean about focusing in on things that are important to you and how you can start now getting, curating some of that for the new year.
Erin: And what about you, honey? Do you have a couple ideas?
CHRIS’S GOALS: PURPOSE, PERSONAL GROWTH, AND A FIRST STEP
Chris: Why this is so important is that when we are not focused on these things, and so Erin, what kind of came to mind is that, I think it's important to have goals or know what's important in a lot of really important areas of your life, and one of them is future, and so there needs to be a future category. There needs to be a personal development category where you're learning and growing in some way, shape, or form. There is definitely a family category and a career category, but maybe some of those other categories are categories where you already give a lot of yourself.
And remember that when we are not paying attention to these other things, including our future, babe, what happens? We don’t feel good. We lose connection with ourself when we're not reaching out and, expanding on our social goals, which by the way, me too. I think this is a human need, is to meet new people and have new experiences and find like-minded people.
I think Erin and I are both in a very similar phase of our life where we've been learning and growing, and now it's time to go out there and meet people that are on the same wavelength, that get us and we get them, and we help each other become better, bring us to life in different ways.
Chris: A big thing for our future goal category: Erin and I want to have bigger audiences.
Chris: And that, that looks different, I think, depending on the time of day and things like that.
Chris: For Erin, that’s writing a book. I think for the both of us, that is getting on stages and expanding our reach and scaling our podcast, and that's why we appreciate you listening to this, is because every parent and every person that we have, the privilege to speak to, not only do we know we're making a difference, but it makes us feel good. This is our purpose. This is our passion, and when we're connected with our passions and purpose consistently, we’re gonna feel good, and ironically, Erin, it helps you show up in all the different other areas of your life, too.
And I think that's what makes this so powerful is because, an exercise that I was having a young adult go through earlier today, which is, we have all these ideas and all these interests and all these passions, and for so many of us, they just stay up here. And for those of you not watching this on video, I'm pointing to my head. They get stuck in our head, and sometimes they die there. They fade there, and there is no worse feeling.
A great way to get started is to start plucking those ideas out of your head, out of your thoughts, get them down onto paper that you can start seeing them and coming up with a plan to get started. And I think that's the philosophy that we want for all of us to take here. We got 90 days, 90 days to get those ideas and interests and curiosities and passions and goals down on the paper, and what do we have to do with them? Just figure out what the very first step is to get started.
HOW RECONNECTING WITH YOURSELF CHANGES YOUR PARENTING
Erin: And remember, parents, that's exactly what we do with the parents who come into our the Extraordinary Parent Coaching Program. We help you first get all that clarity on who you are, what's important to you, what you value, what you're good at, what you're passionate about, and help you turn that into a vision and start focusing on you again.
Erin: So if you're listening to this and you're like, "Oh my God, that sounds amazing, but I just wouldn't even know where to begin," or, "I know I won't make the time for it on my own,", we get it. That's why we love doing what we do, 'cause we're the same. We have coaches of our own too. We probably would not hold ourselves accountable as much as we'd like to if we didn't have other people in our corner.
Chris: Or Erin, I think a lot of parents out there are probably asking the big question, what's this have to do with becoming a better parent?
Erin: I would say that, if you've been here for a while, you've heard us say this a lot. If you're new here, it's, when you learn how to show up more intentionally, and you are clear on who you are, what your purpose is, what your values are, and you start parenting from that place, putting the focus back on yourself, creating time for you again, cultivating more of that self-love for yourself, that is gonna change dynamically how you show up as a parent for your kids, as a partner for your partner, and it makes all the difference.
Erin: It always, always, always starts with us as parents, as human beings and individuals. It comes down to us first.
LETTING GO OF CONTROL: A PERSONAL PARENTING EXAMPLE
Chris: Right. So this is about letting go of control, letting go of trying to be involved in every aspect of our kids' lives.
Chris: As hard as that is sometimes, and trust me, I know, 'cause my son was out sick last week, and boy, was I probably more affected than he was by that. I was so worried that he was missing school and missing cross-country practice and missing time with his friends. I was making myself sick. So I am just as guilty of that, and just as in need of letting go and putting the focus back on myself and continuing to become that leader that I know will ultimately make the biggest difference in my family's life.
Erin: Yeah, I love that. And yeah, you were. I had to remind him a couple times. I'm like, "Chris.
Erin: Let it go. You can’t help that William’s sick. He’s sick. Let him be.
ENVISION A MORE CONNECTED RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR TEEN OR YOUNG ADULT
Erin: So yeah, so it starts with you. And so that's why we started out with that. What is it that you wanna put the focus back on in your life?
Erin: And then yes, of course, you're here because you want a better, stronger, more connected relationship with your teen or young adult. We get that. We do, too. And so what Chris just said, as you naturally and organically put focus back on yourself, and you are after the things that light you up and expand you and evolve you as a human being, you're going to show up differently very naturally with your child.
Erin: They're gonna be curious what you're up to, 'cause your energy's gonna shift. It's just natural. And so learning how to show up in a different energy, right? More curious with them, less controlling, learning to let go a little bit, learning when to stay in your own lane. And I know that sounds a little pushy, but it's true.
Erin: As parents, we have to get better, especially as our kids get older, and, they become 18, 19 into their 20s, we have to get better at staying in our own lane. And so getting real clarity over these next three months is like what does that look like? And this is where doing a little vision work can be helpful.
Erin: If you close your eyes, and you put some, inspiring or grounding music on, and you just envision, what do I want my relationship with them to feel like? How do I want it to look? What kind of things and experiences do I wanna have with my child going into this new year?, Do I wanna be more connected?
Erin: Do I wanna make sure we have, once a week we have an in-depth conversation about how they're doing, what they're up to? Do I wanna see them more often? Do I just wanna have more family time, with them and their siblings and my partner? Just get clarity. What do I wanna be doing? How do I wanna feel in that relationship?
Erin: And once, it always starts with a vision. You can't back into something if you don't have a vision. So when you have that clarity on what does that look like, what does that feel like, then you can back into how can I, not worrying about how can I make them do what I want them to do so that it feels better and it looks like this, 'cause that's where I go first.
Erin: first I'm like, "Okay, I'm gonna make my son, do this, and I'm gonna tell him this is family time, and we're gonna do this," and it never turns out, and then I'm heartbroken, and I feel disappointed, and I get my feelings hurt. And that's what we do to ourselves over and over again. And so it's more like how can I show up a little differently?
Erin: How can I approach this from a different angle? How can I have a different conversation? How might I get a little more curious about maybe what he wants to do, not just what I want him to do with me? And so once you have a vision, and you have that feeling in place, and you have some clarity, then you can get some ideas and get more resourceful.
SLOW DOWN AND CHANGE HOW YOU SHOW UP
Chris: And this is how we create change, is we slow down. We don't just keep charging forward doing the same things and ending up in the same rhythms, and that's part of Erin and I slowing down each week to have this talk with you, so that you can get out of your world, so you can slow down and check in with yourself. And when you check in with yourself, it's your way of getting out of your thoughts and reconnecting with this amazing version of yourself. And this amazing version of yourself, my friend, an amazing future to look forward to.
And when you're connected to those two things, this amazing version of yourself and your amazing future, and then you integrate in everything Erin just shared, which is all the environmental factors.
Chris: That energy shift, this is what opens your kids up. It's what changes their energy. It's what lowers their defense fields, what helps them let you into their world and helps create that connection. And so as you can see, I think we think that it's connection first and then we'll figure out everything else, when in reality it's the other way around.
STRENGTHEN YOUR PARTNERSHIP AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS
Erin: Yeah, I love that. And, we're all so different and unique. It's gonna be different for everybody. But if you are somebody who is thinking that you wanna put some more emphasis on your relationship or you'd like some things to shift or like for Chris and I, we're great.
Erin: We have a wonderful relationship 99% of the time, but there's definitely some things there. Like Chris said, we want to start reaching out and meeting other couples and new people. And, you know, our, one of our goals last year going into this year was to start networking more and meeting more people, in our space as entrepreneurs, as online business owners, and we did that.
Erin: We met some great people.
Erin: But a lot of it was online, and that's not quite the same. And so we decided going into this year, if we're gonna meet more people in our space, we wanna be part of, in-person things, like in-person business masterminds or meeting more people in person. And then we just wanna meet more people in where we live.
Erin: We wanna go bowling with people or play games or, grab dinner or do things that we really love to do and with like-minded people. And so that's something that we're working on in our relationship. And so as you start to think about your partnership, just like you did, with your child, the same, um, suggestion is to get clear.
Erin: What do I want to see shift in my relationship? What do I want more of? What do I want less of? What kind of shifts do I wanna see? How can I show up differently in my partnership? Not how can I get them to do something different and show up differently, but how can I show up differently for my partner and in this relationship?
Erin: And you get clear, and do I need more heartfelt conversations? Do I need to show up more vulnerably? Do I need to be more honest about what my needs and desires are in this relationship? And we could do a whole podcast on just this, and we will 'cause we love this topic of relationships. But it's just to give you some ideas, some, to loosen you up a little bit and help you create a little, like, psychological flexibility on, what, how can I approach this?
Erin: And there might be other areas. There might be friendships, like I said, for me. There might be, extended family. Maybe there's, your siblings or your parents, you don't see them enough. You don't connect enough. You wanna create time for that. Whatever it is for you, spend some time in the next couple days or throughout the next week, just get some clarity.
Erin: And get a journal or a notebook, and as things come to you, just start jotting things down. That's how this process starts. Don't force it. Just start being intentional about giving a little space each day to think about, hmm, what do I want next year to look like? What are some things that I know if I can shift these things, it's gonna change who I am, it's gonna change my relationship with my child, with my relationship with other people in my life?
Erin: And you start to get some clarity.
THREE AREAS TO FOCUS ON: YOURSELF, YOUR PARTNER, AND YOUR CHILD
Chris: Yeah, Erin, I was just gonna say that I think the key word here is just becoming more intentional. Getting off of autopilot, getting out of your day-to-day rhythm, just understanding that it takes a few minutes like this to remember the things that are really important to you, to remember who you are. And I think that a good way of doing this, Erin, is breaking it into categories. One of the categories, and maybe the most important one, is you.
So one of these goals that you're gonna become intentional about, and create a plan for, and do some visioning on, and some journaling on, and come up with next steps on, one thing for you, and just for you. Whether it's a passion, an interest, something you've been putting off, something that you know that if you connect with this, it's gonna bring you to life, it's gonna make you feel good, it's finally gonna get you moving forward in that particular area of your life.
Chris: And then another area of your life is your relationship. And Erin and I, you know, we have done podcasts on this before. We will do more podcasts in the future. But your partner is one of the, if not the most important person in this formula.
Chris: And so if you wanna create a beautiful future, an inspiring future, if you wanna show up stronger in all these different areas of your life, it starts with you, and then it's very quickly followed, Erin, by really understanding how to reconnect with that partner in your life.
NAVIGATING YOUR CHANGING IDENTITY AS A PARENT
Erin: Yeah. I love that. And then yeah, that last part is your relationship with your child.
Erin: That might be right behind, your relationship with your partner, especially as they get older. And I just know 'cause I'm in it with all of you, and it is a little bit of a grieving process, and it's hard.
Erin: And, I, there's lots of days I start crying, and it's not so much mourning the little boy that my son was, it's just knowing that things are shifting. He doesn't need me as much, and he can't wait to get out of here and get off to college, and I get that. And so we have to go through that process with ourselves, especially I think as moms, really kind of letting that part of us, that part of our identity kinda go and moving into some new forms of identity.
Erin: So getting clear on how you wanna see that relationship shift and change so that you don't feel so out of control of it and powerless over it is so important and absolutely doable. So getting some clarity around that is a game changer.
BUILD MOMENTUM OVER THE NEXT 90 DAYS
Chris: Awesome. Thank you everybody for tuning in today. We love you, we appreciate you, we believe in you.
Chris: Erin, these next 90 days, I can just feel it, they're gonna be pretty special. I think they're gonna be pretty magnificent for us. They're gonna be magnificent for everybody that's a part of our community.
Erin: And remember, this is about momentum this isn't about getting everything figured out over these next 90 days and getting it perfect and having this perfect goal in place, because I know some of us are perfectionists out there.
Erin: It’s about starting to build some momentum and getting some of that excitement built up for, okay, instead of dreading the new year, like I am ready for it because I have a plan in place. I have some ideas for some things I want to shift, some things I want to bring to life, and I am ready for this.
Erin: I'm actually excited for this new year to come. That's where we want all of us to be. So remember, this was part one for you parents out there. Make sure you tune in next week, and this is gonna be an episode that we're gonna want you to get to your young adult, because we're gonna be speaking directly to them and how they can start creating a plan for these next 90 days to get themselves ready for a magnificent 2027.
