OPENING EXCERPT: THE FIRST SMALL STEP
-------------------------------------
there's only so much you can do at your desk or spending time in your thoughts thinking
about what you want for yourself or your future or who you are. What if I told you, and I
think we probably know this as parents through experience, life experience, that you've
gotta get started, and then once you get started, everything starts to open up.
It starts to make sense. You start to get clarity. You start to feel better. Everything
starts to change. And so it's not just any step. It's the first small step you don't have to
do it all. You just gotta get started. You gotta figure out, "What is the smallest step that
I can take starting right away?"

WELCOME: NATURE, CONNECTION, AND FEELING GOOD
---------------------------------------------
Erin, are you ready?
I'm so ready. Let's do this.
Welcome everybody to the Extraordinary Purpose Podcast. I'm Chris, and as always, I am here
with the absolutely empowering Erin Verdis. What's up, sweetheart?
What's going on, babe? How's everyone doing out there?
We're doing really good. It is like 80 degrees in October, October 13th to be exact, here in
Ann Arbor, Michigan. It is just the most, like, stunning day outside, and we know it's our
last day like this. And I love 60-degree fall weather too, but this is our last summer day
for sure.
And no matter what we do, we have to find a way to get outside.
Yes. Well, we already have. We already took Koa for a walk, and I plan to get out like five
more times today. It's just way too nice out. And Chris and I have a really fun little
getaway plan that we're super excited about. We've been working on, our plans for the Smoky
Mountains for a long weekend of hiking and just the two of us.
No kids, no pets, no business. Well, we take our business everywhere 'cause we love what we do, but.
It's gonna be an amazing time 'cause it's doing some of our favorite things, and I get the
chance to spend, more quality time with my favorite person.
Oh, honey.
but Erin and I love camping. We're going to try something we haven't done in a long time,
maybe ever, and that's pick a really challenging hike.
Yeah.
something a little bit more strenuous, something that's really gonna put us to the test and
feel like a, a major reward at the finish line., I'm looking forward to that.
I am too. We love getting out for hikes, but you know, we're in flat land Michigan here, so
there's no real elevation.
No, there certainly isn't. So we recommend, take advantage guys. It's, it's mid-fall
already. Take advantage of this weather, this season. It's a great time to get outside.
Remember, like it helps you feel good. Like that's... So much of the stuff, Erin, that you
and I talk about on this podcast, what's it really for? It's to get us feeling good. As
parents, it's for us to help our young adults. I mean, really, really good, important stuff.
I love it. Yeah, there's nothing like getting out in the sunshine, and just typically, other
than today, the crisp fall air. So yeah, get out, get out for a walk, get out for a hike,
get out on a little getaway if you can.
Yeah, do it. Do it. Come on.
WHY THE NEXT 90 DAYS MATTER
---------------------------
it. Well, speaking of doing it, we are back with this next episode. So if you were with us
last week, remember we talked about really how to make the absolute most of these next 90
days or so.
We're a little bit past, short of the 90-day mark now, but really taking advantage of the
rest of October, November, December, before the new year, and we talked about how so many of
us kind of get to this place in the year, and think, "Ugh, I'm just gonna kinda let things
slide. I'll just, I'll start fresh in the new year."
And nothing wrong with that frame of mind. That is, like, how we're wired in our culture.
But we don't have to... We could break those traditions, and that, that wiring, and so we
talked about how to help parents do that. So if you missed that episode, go back to last
week and check that one out. And today, we're gonna talk about the same thing, how to help
your teen or young adult really make the most of the next 90 days, and how you can help
them, parents.
And then what we're hoping is that you pass this episode on to them, and let them hear this
firsthand.
Because let's just put it out there, Erin, I think that as parents sometimes we, we don't
feel this way, but let me just speak this truth to us directly, which is so much can change
in the next 90 days.
Yeah.
so for right now, that's October, November, December. It's the holiday season. a lot of us
parents, we're thinking just getting through the holiday is getting to the end of the year.
we also know that our young adults, and therefore us parents, we're struggling. We're
overwhelmed. And so this gets us to today's topic, Erin, which is, yeah, we're gonna be
talking now directly to our young adults, because back to what I just said, so much can
change in the next 90 days. And Erin, what are some of the things that..., you and I talk to
young adults every day. We talk to parents every day. We're parents ourselves. Like, what
are some of the biggest reasons that parents reach out to us right now,.
WHEN YOUR TEEN OR YOUNG ADULT SEEMS UNMOTIVATED
-----------------------------------------------
yeah, I think something we touched on a, a number of episodes back, which you can go back
and find as well, is just motivation, my young adult doesn't seem motivated, or they're
they're struggling to find their motivation, or a lot of times we just hear, like, "They're
just lazy," which Chris and I don't believe that.
We don't believe any teen or young adult is just lazy. There's a reason that they appear to
be that way. I would say motivation, lack of direction, lack of confidence,.
Yeah.
just kind of feeling like they're drifting out there and not having any real grounding on,
like, their future.
Yeah. And what are parents seeing? They're seeing all those things. They're seeing distractions,.
Yeah.
time on our phone, so much time on social media, and then the biggest resistance or biggest
distraction of all, which is our own negative self-talk,.
Yeah.
thoughts, your young adult's own thoughts working against them every single step of the day.
So when you see them not motivated and not feeling good and acting lethargic, is sometimes
the root cause of the problem. and so that's why we're here today, is to give you hope, to
talk about some of the possibilities, Helping you get them started on their journey by just
taking that first small step, which can begin the change,.
Yeah, and, you know, this sounds simplistic, but it's the hardest thing for us as human
beings, and this is what I coach so much on with the young women I work with, is that what
makes us feel better, and we're all looking to feel better all the time, we're looking to
feel good and feel proud of ourselves and, you know, to feel accomplished and successful and
have that energy and that confidence that we see some people have.
And where that comes from is just doing the damn thing and taking the damn step forward. But
it's the hardest thing for us, we face so much resistance that most of us aren't aware of,
not just our young adults, but us. We're not even aware of what's holding us back and what
that resistance is, and we wonder why we feel so down on ourselves, why we have addictive
behaviors, why we feel lethargic, why we feel depressed.
And so something I coach on a lot is just learning how to take that step forward. And so
what we're gonna break down today a little bit is, start to get more curious about what's
getting in the way, what that resistance is, and then how to start taking those steps
forward.
Here's our philosophy before we even get started, and that is, okay, while everybody else is
in survival mode and just trying to survive the rest of the year, guess what? We're gonna be
different. Erin, you're gonna be different. I'm gonna be different. We're gonna be
different. You, listener, these next 90 days are gonna be different,.
and so I want for you to start to think about, for your young adult, 'cause remember, that's
the focus of today's episode. This is about your young adult. You see their potential. You
know what they're capable of. You know they're talented. You know that there's something in
there just waiting to come out, and it's stuck. it's stuck for a lot of important reasons
for us to work on these next 90 days, we're gonna talk about some of the steps that we can
take to get unstuck. But it starts with that belief and that philosophy that these next 90
days, we're not gonna be like everybody else. We're gonna be intentional. We're gonna be
building momentum so that when January 1st comes around, which will be in a snap, um, not
starting from zero. Your young adult is definitely not starting from zero. We don't want
that for them. We want for them to go into 2027 or the next year with confidence, with
motivation, and most importantly, with momentum, meaning they're not still thinking about
these things.
They're actually doing these things. They've already gotten started. And just think about
the difference that that will make, not only for them and their life and their future, but
let's be honest, how is that gonna make us parents feel, Erin?
STEP 1: NOTICE WHAT MATTERS TO YOU
----------------------------------
Yeah, absolutely. And so we really have kind of this three-step process that we wanna run
past you, and something, you know, parents, you can be very involved in helping your young
adult kinda get started on this, and like I said, passing this on to them so they can take
this and run with it.
And so that first step is to help them start noticing, noticing the things that are
important to them, noticing what's meaningful. So if your young adult seems lethargic, they
seem stuck, they seem unmotivated, they're a little depressed, they're dreading the new year
because they just feel like it's gonna be another year of feeling, you know, disconnected
and not feeling grounded in themselves, the way they can start to build a little bit of
momentum is to discover what's meaningful to them.
What am I after? Who's important to me? What are some of my goals? What are some of the
things that I wanna bring to life in this new year? That alone can start to loosen things up
a little bit. It starts to get them excited about just what's possible. They don't have to
have the whole game plan. None of this that we're talking about today is getting it all
together.
It's like Chris said, it's getting us to this place, getting them to a place where they can
take just the next step forward, and that alone will make them start feeling better. So what
are some goals that they wanna focus on, even just one or two? Who's important to them? Who,
what relationships are important to them?
What are some new things they might wanna start that are gonna start making them feel better
about themselves?
I think just noticing these things, Erin, it starts to change how you feel. Because
remember, guys, if we're distracted all the time, and let's be honest, parents, we're
distracted a lot, our young adults are distracted almost 100% of the time, and if you are
distracted, guess what? You're not noticing and connected to those goals, to those things
that are really important to you, those people that are-- that play such an important role
in your life, your future,.
we're just somewhere else, and when we're somewhere else, we don't feel our best. But when
we start to shift our perspective and we start to notice these things again, and we start
doing that consistently, almost as a habit, it starts to help us feel good. We start to get
clarity., Most importantly, the reason we start to notice these things is because we're no
longer following those distractions. Our focus is forward, and when our focus is forward,
we're more mindful, we're more present. We're more in the position, Erin, that we need to be
in, our young adults need to be in, in order to start to navigate some of those challenges
more consistently moving forward and to take that all-important first step.
COACHING EXAMPLES: INTERNSHIP PREPARATION AND HEALTHIER HABITS
--------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I love that. And I thought I would just share just a couple tangible examples that I'm
working on right now with a couple of my clients, and so that way, parents, you can get an
idea of exactly, like, what some of the things are that I'm focusing on with, with my
clients. And if you're a young adult listening to this, you can kind of, if you're sitting
there thinking, "Well, I don't know, what does that mean?
I'm not sure what's important to me. What, what might that be for me?"
Yeah.
have one client, she's, I think, a junior in college, and she has already had an experience
with kind of being late to the game getting ready for some internships this past year, and
so she wants to be way ahead of schedule, and she wants to, like, really get going and
moving forward and getting ready for these internships for next summer.
Yeah.
so that's what we're working on is, like, getting all the resources in place, having her get
clarity on her messaging and the emails she wants to write up and what her brand is and the
messaging she wants to bring to some of these, companies for these internships. And that
way, right when the new year comes, as soon as the holidays are over and the craziness is
done, she's gonna hit the ground running.
She's ready to go. So she's done some of that pre-work. She's built some of that momentum.
She's got, you know, she's overcome some of that resistance, which we're gonna get into in a
minute, and she's got a little bit of a game plan. And then another client of mine, hers is,
health and fitness related and wellness.
She's, wants to lose some weight. She's, you know, wants to start eating healthier. She
wants to have more of, like, a, a really disciplined regimen in her life, and so we're
working on that, getting the gym membership and meal planning and all of that. She wants to
go into the holidays feeling really confident with all of that, so she's not just making a
New Year's resolution on December 31st, but that she's already going.
So she's already doing a lot of this now, so when the new year comes, she's got that
momentum build. And I could give a ton of other examples, but you get the idea is noticing
what's important to me, what are some of my goals, what are these, some of these things that
I know are gonna make me feel better, and then you come up with a game plan.
So why don't we talk about the second step, Chris, which is the resistance that we all face?
STEP 2: NOTICE RESISTANCE AND DISTRACTIONS
------------------------------------------
Yeah, absolutely. And, you know, part of the reason that we face resistance, or we, we have
all these distractions in our life and things that are keeping us stuck is because we have
all these ideas, we have all these curiosities, we have all these things that are kind of up
here in our heads, but we don't exactly know yet what to do with them.
And that's obviously something that Erin and I, we coach on every day in the young adult
program is we help young adults sort all of that, make sense of it, start to explore it,
take some of those first steps because of how it can change everything. But what I also
wanna be very clear on is that let's get real about what's been holding our young adults
back up.
Yeah.
point in time. Why they are the way that they are. They're amazing. They're incredible,
okay? They are gonna be super happy and super successful. Erin and I, we say that to you
directly and with the utmost confidence that that's the absolute 100% truth. But there is
something right now that needs to be addressed, and that is all their resistance, is so much
that is weighing them down and holding them back and keeping them in place, and part of our
job and part of your job as a parent is to help your young adult begin the process of
navigating it, from disconnecting from it. And Erin, you mentioned that, that word noticing.
And the simplest way to get started with learning how to navigate and disconnect from your
resistance, from your distractions, is first by noticing them,.
if you don't notice them, if you're just going through your day and you're just going from
one thing to the next and trying to get to the finish line, you're not in control, you're
not in control of much. And part of what we love helping young adults with is helping them
get control back over their life,.
'cause right now, their phone's controlling them. Their thoughts are controlling them. Their
friends might be controlling them, and we want to put them back in the driver's seat of
their life. That's the game changer.
Yeah.
so Erin the second step as part of the process that we're walking through today, is just
noticing what some of those distractions are. And the way that we do that, and Erin you can
kinda fill in if you'd like, is just by pausing throughout your day, checking in with
yourself, slowing down, and then noticing those distractions, those things that are holding
you back, especially right before you're about to do something important.
INTERNAL DISTRACTIONS: FEAR AND NEGATIVE SELF-TALK
--------------------------------------------------
Yeah, and so Chris named a handful of a lot of those external distractions, our phones,
social media, comparing ourselves to other people. That's a huge one. And that kind of leads
me to our internal distractions, which are huge, which actually may outweigh in some ways
these external distractions.
they.
Because I think what leads to picking up the phone and needing to be with people and friends
all the time, or partying, or whatever those distractions are, is our internal environment,.
yeah.
the negative self-talk. It's the negative thinking. It's the fear that we don't talk about
with other people, that they don't talk about with other people, that they're holding a lot
of that in.
They're not even aware of it, and they wonder what's, you know, sort of prompting them to
constantly, the dopamine hit, needing their phone, needing to check social media. So that
slowing down that Chris just talked about is imperative to start noticing, and that, you
know, we've said this a lot of times on our podcast.
It's the first step that we teach in our coaching course with young adults is learning how
to breathe differently, just learning how to slow down throughout your day and intentionally
check in and notice, what am I thinking about right now? What am I saying to myself?,
Because when you shine the light on something, you can't hide from it anymore.
It's like you call it out. And so right now a lot of that, the internal distractions are in
the dark, but when they start to notice and become more mindful of those things, they can't
hide anymore, and it's almost like you have to do something about it. Parents, you know what
we're talking about. We've all been there as adults.
We've lived a long enough life now to recognize that. And so that's the first step is
noticing what's going on within them., And, you know, as far as, you know, parents being
supportive in this realm is it's just about learning how to ask those more curiosity
questions. What's going well for you this week?
You know, what's been a struggle this month for you? Is there anything I can support you
with? What's been hard for you? What's been great? And it's to kind of help them to see that
contrast and that polarity of, like, what's going well, what's not going well. And when it's
just sort of that innocent, curious question, they're gonna open up.
They'll let you know, and they get talking. They're gonna hear themselves talking, and then
that's your in to, to kind of dig a little bit deeper with them.
WEEKLY FAMILY CHECK-INS AND MORE INTENTIONAL CHOICES
----------------------------------------------------
And when I love what you just said, because if as parents we are asking those curiosity
questions to our young adults, and maybe We're not doing it all the time, that would
probably drive them crazy. But, you know, maybe you're doing it every Sunday. You're doing a
little family check-in, and you're getting curious, and you're asking them, "What's going
well?
What's not going well?" Just by getting them starting to notice some of those things on a
weekly basis, so starting with weekly, that will then warm them up, as Erin just kinda used
that term, I love that term, to then getting better at doing it day to day, moment to
moment, so that it just becomes an automatic response.
Before they do something, they check in with themselves, they slow down, and they notice
some of these things. And the more... Remember the, the real power of noticing. You're not
just noticing. You're more present. You're more mindful. You're more in control. That
control is what helps young adults make different choices eventually.
Mm-hmm.
Might ask, "Well, what, what's the different choice?" It's something in alignment with
what's important to you, which you've already identified. Those curiosities, those goals,
those values, that future, those relationships that are important to you, those are the
choices that you're making in that moment instead of letting your distractions control you
or your self-talk control you.
FOCUS BLOCKS AND NAVIGATING NEGATIVE SELF-TALK
----------------------------------------------
Yeah, absolutely. And so again, back to sort of a tangible example, you know, the, my client
who's working on the internships,.
Mm-hmm.
she's got a lot going on. She's the president of this, she heads up this club and that club,
and does a lot of different things. And so we talked about her biggest distractions are that
she wor- burns herself out.
She gets exhausted 'cause she's trying to do too much all the time, and then she beats
herself up and has that negative self-talk, and then ends up doing nothing, right? And just
keeps saying, "I'll put it off, I'll do this later." And so we talked about that. You know,
what's something different she can do is create some focus blocks and make sure that she has
some time set aside specifically to work on these things.
And she never would've noticed that before. She never would've come to that conclusion to
take that simple... It sounds so obvious, well, of course you just create space for it. But
she wasn't doing that, and without us working together, she may not have, like, recognized
how simple that step could be.
And then same thing, my client who's working on weight loss and, you know, having a
healthier trajectory in her, wellness journey, is getting, you know, making sure that she
creates the space for this, and recognizing that overcoming some of that resistance, that
again, internal dialogue with herself that, "Why bother?
I'm never gonna lose the weight. I'm never gonna get healthier." And so we're working on
putting affirmations up and mantras, like, all over her bedroom and in her car so she's
kinda rewiring what she's saying to herself. So those are just some tangible examples of how
you can pivot some of that negative self-talk and those distractions.
HELPING YOUNG ADULTS RECONNECT WITH THEIR POTENTIAL
---------------------------------------------------
Erin, you know what? I, that's so wonderful, and thank you so much for sharing that. I bet
our audience just loves that because I bet there's parents out there with young adults that
are right in that same phase of their life and struggling with some of the same things. I
think what a lot of parents would love to know, Erin, is that, I think parents, we think
that our young adults don't know what's important to them or don't have ideas and don't have
curiosities and things that they want for their future.
Or they think that they don't notice that, "Oh my God, I'm on my phone all the time and
that's not good for me." Or, "I'm spending so much time alone in my room and that's not good
for me," or this or that. Soon as they get into an environment, and there's a lot of great
environments, but one of them is working with Erin and myself and getting into a coaching
environment where once a week they're focused on the most important person in the world,
which is them. all the sudden they just open up and maybe they haven't opened up until this
point in time. And parents don't take that personal. It's because they've been distracted
and in their own worlds and doing their own things. But as soon as they slow down and work
with Erin and myself, all of a sudden all of this stuff starts to come out.
Yeah.
help them make sense of it and create a plan, which that's coming up.
That's step three, correct, Erin?
Yep.
everything starts to change. And so we just wanna remind parents that they are in there.
Even if you think that they're not and you're angry and you're pissed and all of these
things, they're in there. They're just waiting to come out.
Yeah, and something that Chris and I love to remind parents of, 'cause we work with these
kids all the time, they are so capable. They're so resourceful. They're so fricking smart.
They know. They know who they are in a lot of ways. They have what it takes, they just don't
show it to us. And, and our kids do the same.
We always wanna remind you of that, you know. We have teens and young adults, four of them
between the two of us, and they're not always gonna let us in. But when we work with your
kids, 'cause we're totally, and we're different mentors for them, they open up, and they are
so capable and resourceful. They know what to do.
They just need to get unstuck, and they need to, mainly recognize what's been holding them
back, what their distractions are.
That's right.
STEP 3: TAKE THE FIRST SMALL STEP
---------------------------------
and so yeah, that kind of moves us into step three, which is learning how to take that first
step forward, like really recognizing, okay, this is what I can do next.
And what I'm gonna say here, kind of piggybacking off what I just said, is when they slow
down, recognize what's important to them, know what's next, and then they start to recognize
the distractions that are holding them back, they're gonna know what the next step is, you
know. I mean, Chris and I, we always say we're just a catalyst.
Our coaching program and our coaching is just a catalyst to help these kids dig deep and
learn about who they are and what's next for them. So when, by the time they get to this
third step, they're gonna know what the next step is., If they still don't really know, or
if they, you know, they're, they...
Sometimes they're afraid to, to ask their parents for support. They're afraid to ask for
help. And so a way, parents, that you can step in, once again, is a really great question on
a weekly basis is like, "What do you need from me?"
Mm-hmm.
Right? "How can I be there for you? What, what kind of support do you need?"
And that might just be, "I need you to back off a little, leave me alone.
Yeah.
week." It might be, "I have this great idea, and I wanna know if this is something you'd be
willing to pay for, or could you help me research this idea?, You know, I'm really swamped
with schoolwork. Is this something you can help me with?"
But just opening up that question, what do you need from me? What kind of support? How can I help?
WHY ACTION HELPS CREATE CLARITY
-------------------------------
Erin, what if I told you that our young adults are not ever gonna figure it out until they
take the first step?
Mm-hmm.
there's only so much you can do at your desk or spending time in your thoughts thinking
about what you want for yourself or your future or who you are.
You don't wait, that's part of our philosophy, too, is you have an idea, there's something
that's important to you,.
Yeah.
something holding you back, we're gonna take action right away because we know we start
waiting, we start procrastinating, and we start getting distracted.
Yeah.
never take that step, and that is not what we want. That's not why we're here today having
this conversation. We want for all of us, and our young adults especially, to start taking
these steps every day and then learn and grow as a result of that every single day. And as
parents, we can be there.
Erin, you're absolutely right. This is where our role starts to evolve as parents.
Mm.
them what to do. We're there for help, support, guidance if they want it, but definitely not
to do it for them.
BUILDING MOMENTUM BEFORE THE NEW YEAR
-------------------------------------
Yeah. I love that, honey, and I just love that, that it's true. This is where the greatest
opportunity for our relationship with our older teens and young adults to start evolving.
It's a beautiful space to be in, challenging at times, and sometimes hard to just keep, to
step back, but what results from that when, when everything kind of turns out well is, is
really beautiful.
And so, parents, just imagine if, you know, you help your teen or young adult really get
this three-step process in place now. They have the next, whatever, 80 days or so, whatever
it is, to get going, right? To start getting curious, to slowing down and asking themselves
that bigger question, "What's important to me?
What's coming up for me this coming year? What would I, what do I wanna focus on? What are
some parts of my life I'd like to change? What are some new things I'd like to get started
on? How do I want my relationships to shift or to evolve?" And then them noticing what's
holding them back and getting some clarity around that, and then knowing what the next two
or three small steps are gonna be.
And like Chris said, it's really just that one, but usually with the one comes just one or
two follow-up steps. So they can do that now, or they have those small steps. They're just
ready to take flight in the new year. It's so beautiful. . They're gonna have so much
momentum built and ready to go.
They're gonna be really excited about what's coming up for them this year.
So parents, is why we're here, we have three months, 90 days in front of us. want it to be
the same, where we're afraid for our kids, we're overwhelmed, we're angry, we, we can't
understand why they're not doing anything? Or do we wanna help them learn this process?
believe me, they want to.
They, they're ready. They've been ready for a long time. That's why they are the way that
they are right now is 'cause they want it more than anything. And when you want something
and you're trying to figure out your future, that's when these distractions, they show up
stronger than ever before in your life. And so if anything, it's a signal that now is the
time get clarity, to start to take some of these first steps, for us parents to show up
differently for our young adults along that journey. And just think, if we do get started,
if your young adults get started, how far can they get in the next 90 days? Where will they
be by January 1st,.
Yeah.
And then what can next year look like, Erin? That's what I'm excited about. That's what I
can't wait to see, is what next year can really start to look like.
Yeah.
about that.

on their own, if you're a young adult listening to this saying, "I, I love this, but I know
I'm gonna need some support and some guidance," that's what we're here for.
Yeah.
