Learning to Let Go as Your Children Become Young Adults

Ronni’s experience with parent coaching at Extraordinary Purpose

Ronni came to coaching with Erin as her children were moving toward adulthood. She wanted to learn how to let go, but she was also tired of the challenges between them and the feeling of being questioned. She knew something needed to change and was willing to begin with herself.

Over eight weeks, Ronni made space to explore who she was beyond the day-to-day demands of parenting, how she wanted to show up with her children, and what connection could look like as they grew more independent.

Here is what Ronni shared about her experience:

Extraordinary Purpose Life Coaching with Erin and Chris was an amazing journey of discovery of who I was, who I am, and who I want to be as a mother, wife, and woman. The exercises during the 8 weeks were incredibly helpful, required journaling (which I actually enjoyed doing!) and helped me uncover my values, passions, and strengths.  I learned how I want to show up in different situations with my kids, how to navigate difficult conversations, and how to visualize and create enjoyable experiences with my family.  I also learned that the changes I need to make as a parent are not about perfection but more about connection, influence, and acceptance.

Erin was present, prepared, relatable, and so encouraging during this journey of self-discovery.  I started the program to learn how to “let go” of my children as I was grappling with their impending independence as young adults and becoming an “empty nester”. I was feeling fatigued by their “challenges” and resentful of being questioned.  I am ending the program understanding their need to assert their independence and my responsibility  to let them experience the growth needed to move forward into adulthood. I recognize that I still have more to learn and skills to practice but I feel more confident in navigating this next chapter of my life, letting go, and letting my children grow into capable and independent adults.

Your child’s next chapter is yours, too

Ronni didn’t describe a perfect ending. She described feeling more confident, more connected to her values, and more able to give her children room to grow while she continued growing herself. That is the heart of our life coaching for parents of teens and young adults: a space to focus on how you want to show up, even when you can’t control every choice your child makes.
